Positions are unpaid in monetary terms, but you will gain valuable skills, great friends from across the world, useful experience for your CV and the knowledge that you made a difference. The volunteer programmes run from between 2 and 8 weeks, with the option to extend weekly or tag more than one volunteer programme onto another.

17 Rewarding Opportunities:

1. Hope Journey - caring for babies with AIDS, assisting at pre-schools in townships or working at a school where street children are being rehabilitated

2. This Way Up- Help youth and young men with troubled pasts to catch up their education, and become citizens able to earn a living and able to contribute to the communities they’ve come from. Would suit older volunteers.

3. Heart for Orphans- Enrich the lives of orphans and abandoned babies, who have no one else to hold them, play with them or read them stories

4. Animal Charity- Work with a team of vets who give excellent service to animals in townships, enabling communities living way below the bread line to care for their animals.

5. Healing thru Horses- Assist disabled children in developing confidence and stimulating muscle movement through doing balancing and stretching exercises on horseback.

6. Enabling Disabled Children- Improve the quality of life of chronically mentally and physically disabled children needing stimulation and friendship – only for emotionally strong volunteers.

7. Youth at Risk- Interact with teens and young adults at risk on the streets, be part of an educational program, assist at a soup kitchen serving Cape Town’s homeless, build friendships with children at a home for boys, and use creativity to woo youth off the streets.

8. Penguin Rescue- Exciting nature conservation opportunity, ensuring the survival of endangered seabirds (including penguins) that are victims of oil spills.

9. Conservation & Community Combo- Thru volunteering gain insight into conservation as well as reach out at the local children's farm school and orphanage.

10. Hands on Big5 - Plunge into a hands-on conservation project in one of South Africa's most scenic Big 5 game reserves. While getting involved in every aspect of conservation management on the reserve, your work will include habitat rehabilitation, elephant impact monitoring, game counts, telemetry tracking of lions and much more.

11. Community Building on Kibbutz- Kibbutz style project, based in a small rural town, with opportunities for you to get immersed into the community as a whole by assisting at a crèche, woman's sewing group, vegetable growing project, drug re-hab program for teenagers, HIV program and even a local sports program for youth at risk.

12. Children of the Kruger- Assist at the rural community schools with their feeding, reading and sport education programs. Bring fun and energy to learning through team sports like soccer, cricket and netball.

13. Wildlife Enthusiast- Get children enthusiastic about caring for their environment, through their encounters with rescued animals from our wildlife orphanage. Get involved with both the care of the animals and the educational talks and tours of the wildlife orphanage.

14. Motor Skills Development Course for Rural Children- Explore different kinds of therapy ranging from play therapy to speech therapy, and develop awareness within the greater community as to how to enable children with developmental delays.

15. Essential Ecology- Explore and investigate wildlife, habitats and promote the natural biodiversity and scientific understanding of the Waterberg region's understudied flora and fauna. This is of great importance as human populations are expanding in the region and this beautiful environment needs to be conserved.

16. Monkey Rehab- Encounter monkeys and other primates as well as an array of exotic birds, in a large forested sanctuary. Assist with feeding and cleaning enclosures, and observe these magnificent beasts in action.

17. Stop Attack on Sharks- Get up close and personal with these majestic giants of the deep, either from a boat or in a cage dive. Do research and observe them in their natural habitat, and discover that the Great White Shark is less about "Jaws" and more about "awe".
