Description:
By joining this combination programme you will have the opportunity to travel and teach by joining three of our most popular community projects in Central America. The children you will be teaching in Guatemala and Honduras have little or no access to education and the local communities have requested we provide help. Spanish lessons are included as you will be teaching the children basic literacy and numeracy in Spanish. In Costa Rica however you will take an introduction to TEFL course as you will be teaching English to local workforces who work in tourism and desperately want to learn the language to improve their livelihoods. Volunteers will spend a month in each country and enjoy side trips and visits to the ‘must’ see places in each location, such as biking, hiking and kayaking at Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, horseriding, hiking and hot springs in Honduras and canopy tours, snorkelling and surfing in Costa Rica.
No formal teacher-training is required as each Volunteer will be supported by the GVI staff. 60 hours of one-on-one Spanish lessons are included, plus further group sessions in Costa Rica. Plans and curriculums are available and the volunteers will undertake an Introduction to TEFL course in Costa Rica. Volunteers should be enthusiastic, willing to work in basic conditions and happy to work with adults and children.
You will live with local families in the beautiful bustling colonial towns of Antigua, Guatemala, and Copán in Honduras and travel to the local communities by bus and pick-up. The cost of education in Guatemala and Honduras is often prohibitive and GVI, along with leaders of the indigenous communities, have built schools and started “aulas abiertas” that are free to attend. Lessons range from basic literacy and numbers to art and games. In Costa Rica, volunteers walk a short distance to work as the English classes will be in and around the coastal village of Playas del Coco.
