Teaching English in South Africa
Vacancy: Teaching English in South Africa
Company: Global Vision International
Category: Gap year projects (Community development, Teaching English, Teaching)
Dates: First Monday of the month, excluding December
Cost: From £1295
Description:
Volunteers joining the project in South Africa will have the opportunity to teach at local primary schools or work in orphanages and child care centres. Most of the work takes place in the Emjindini township where there is no shortage of under resourced and under-funded crèches and primary schools. These provide care and education for disadvantaged children many of whom have broken families as a result of the AIDS pandemic.
There are also a number of state primary schools in the township that provide structured education for disadvantaged children, many of whom will depend on their education to escape from poverty. Due to the high number of students in each class volunteers perform an important role in assisting the teachers to carry out their lessons. Volunteers will all be teaching English but there will be opportunities to teach other topics such as maths, science, geography and many more.
After finishing work at the school or the child care centres there are extra-curricular activities that you can get involved with, such as; sports, music, drama or even fundraising.
Volunteers will be based in Barberton, a small town in the Mpumalanga province. It is located close to the Swaziland and Mozambique borders.
There are plenty of things to do in the local area; such as historical and cultural tours, safaris, white water rafting and abseiling.
