Description:
Volunteers who join this project have the unique opportunity of being immersed in one of several indigenous communities situated near Antigua Guatemala while teaching English. Volunteers will live in the colonial town of Antigua and will teach indigenous communities in the surrounding area. The local families cannot afford the fees to put their children through education so GVI, along with leaders of the indigenous communities, have developed their own schools to assist children who otherwise would not have the opportunity of any formal education or who need educational reinforcement. This, with GVI’s financial support then allows children to enter formal schooling. Our programmes have been running for several years and many of these children are now attending secondary school where English appears on their school Curriculum. Unfortunately with unqualified English teachers in the schools, the children often fail this part of their studies, and ultimately, the whole year. By teaching our children English, alongside a qualified TEFL trainer, the children are more likely to learn English and pass the exams, thus having more chance of completing the year. Half your working day will be spent teaching English, with the other half preparing lessons working alongside your TEFL teacher. Volunteers joining this project will take an introductory TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course in Guatemala which will help prepare you to teach indigenous children English.
