Dates: All year round (contact us)
Cost: from £1295 for 5 weeks
Description:
This placement is a great balance of learning yourself and facilitating the learning of others from having the opportunity to both work with local artists and teach art & design to children. Spending time at workshops run by local artists allows for a deep cultural understanding by learning techniques in wood carving, pottery and batik printing, amongst others.
Running art clubs with school children will see you pass on your own creative flair to give budding artists the chance to develop their own skills and forms of expression.
Art and Design in Accra, Ghana
Art has always been an important part of West African life, both as a decorative and a communicative medium. Although Ghana is blessed with a number of talented artists, artistic development is often restricted by a narrow school curriculum and limited resources. During part of the project, you will help to run school art clubs within a number of local schools. The other part of the project will involve working with local artists, if they are available, through which you will learn a great deal about the imagery, history and style of African art, which has a unique character set apart from 'Western' heritage.
Art and Design in Port Elizabeth, South Africa
Art plays a massive part in South African culture. The landscape and people of this stunning nation have become a backdrop for thousands of artists. However, because the core academic subjects (English, maths and science) take priority in schools, many children are deprived of exploring and developing their creative talents. You will soon find that the children are keen to learn and are often very talented. Spending time with the children will also enable you to quickly build close friendships over a common interest. You will also have the oportunity to work with local artists, enabling you to better understand the imagery and style unique to South African artwork.
