Hockey is becoming an increasingly global sport and this placement gives you the opportunity to enhance the game for youngsters who want to share in its popularity. Organising fun training sessions and matches is very rewarding for both you and the players, and you will soon see how easy it is to develop local talent through your time and dedication.

You will also have the opportunity to play the sport with other volunteers and local hockey clubs, a fantastic cultural exchange!

Hockey is a rapidly growing sport in Ghana. The sport is proving extremely popular with school teams and major clubs across the country. Many young Ghanaians are eager to play the game but there are few opportunities to so. You will work closely with a number of hockey clubs in the capital, Accra, who openly welcome volunteers to run and organise young teams.

Hockey has not received the same development and attention as rugby, cricket and even football, so development of the younger generations is often lacking, and none more so than in the townships of Port Elizabeth. The emphasis is not on developing Africa’s next international hockey players, but about getting alongside children from less-advantaged backgrounds and building friendships over a common ground.
