Teaching in Buddhist Temples, Sri Lanka

Vacancy: Teaching in Buddhist Temples, Sri Lanka
Company: MondoChallenge
Category: Gap year projects (Community development, Teaching)

Description:

Currently we are running three main programmes in Sri Lanka, the community support projects based in the villages of Menikhinna and Digana, and teaching projects based in the village of Pilimatalava, and the Buddhist Centre at Hingurakgoda.

Menikhinna and Digana are small villages situated approximately 12 kms from Kandy. A monk named Rev. Dhammaloka runs Menikhinna temple which is the centre of the volunteer programme there. He has been living in the village for many years and is very active, allowing the temple grounds and buildings to be used by the community. Activities include a pre-school, old age care, computer training and youth activities. This temple is the real hub of the village and there is plenty of work for volunteers to get involved in!

In Pilimatalava, our volunteers are involved in teaching monks, providing computer support to the temple and working in local primary and secondary schools. The opportunity also exists for our volunteers to live on the temple grounds, helping them to gain a real insight into the lives and ideas of the Buddhist monks.

In the Buddhist Centre at Hingurakgoda you would be involved in teaching English to novice monks and other villagers in the temple including younger students and adults as well as providing support to a local junior school.

Douglas King, from UK (Pilimatalava) “There cannot be a friendlier place in the world. Working with different groups, and living with monks within a temple compound has given me a unique insight into the culture and life here.”

Paul Kirk, from UK (Sudamaramahaya Temple)
"Sri Lanka is fantastic. The project at Sarasavigama is going really well both at the pre-school and with the various classes at the temple. Everyone in the village is so friendly - especially the kids, and they have a fantastic work ethic and sense of fun."
