Teaching in the Himalyan foothills, India

Vacancy: Teaching in the Himalyan foothills, India
Company: MondoChallenge
Category: Gap year projects (Teaching, Childcare)

Description:

The region of Darjeeling is one of the most beautiful parts of the Himalayan foothills, with a long tradition as a ‘hill station’ much sought after by those living in the heat of the plains! The famous Darjeeling railway is one of the highest operating in the world, and Kalimpong itself is right on the border of Sikkim, famous for it’s beauty and isolation.

Our volunteers are currently working in nine rural primary schools in this area. Five of these are situated in small villages near to Kalimpong with gorgeous mountain views and the other four are closer to Darjeeling with one in the town of Ghoom and another in the Teesta Valley tea plantation.

The essence of our projects is that they are community based, which gives our volunteers the ability to learn from, as well as contribute something to the local people.

For more information on these projects, and for our other projects world-wide, check out our website at http://www.mondochallenge.org, or call our team on + 44 (0) 1604 585225.

Allan and Annabel Westray, from UK (Lotus Academy,)
“Teaching at Lotus has been a great experience. The children are so affectionate and keen to learn and it is very satisfying when you see progress being made! MondoChallenge brings status to schools, encouraging parents to send their children. Volunteers have also helped to change teaching methods and have brought a wider view of life to children, teachers and parents.”
