Description:

Play a hands-on role in the long-term conservation of African wildlife on this GVI conservation expedition in South Africa. Enjoy first-class wildlife viewing and live on a game reserve in the heart of Southern Africa as part of a wildlife research team. Run in conjunction with the Karongwe Ecological Research Institute and other partners, this conservation expedition give you the opportunity to participate in wildlife monitoring projects, including assisting with research on predator / prey interactions. You will learn how to radio track, and possibly get involved with the darting and fitting of radio tracking collars to lions and leopards. Experience spectacular mountain habitats at satellite camps, and help with conservation and biodiversity studies.

How this program makes a difference:
GVI expedition members collect vital behavioral data on reintroduced predators and larger herbivores. The information gathered is used to give an accurate picture of the predators' impact on prey populations, and determine social structure, genetics, and spatial movement. This is vital information which helps in the maintenance of natural resources, and ultimately assists in the conservation of some of Africa's important natural heritage bioregions.

Highlights:

  • Live on a game reserve in the heart of the African bush
  • Master radio telemetry techniques
  • Learn to track animals through the bush
  • Get acquainted with lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants and rhinos
  • See the Blyde River Canyon in the Drakensberg Mountains
  • Work alongside FGASA qualified South African Guides
  • Participate in educational days with the local communities
  • Help with a biodiversity research program
  • Sleep out in the bush under the African stars

Internships and Field Work:
By participating in a 10 week expedition you will be eligible to apply for an Internship or Job working in the field with GVI.
