Wonders of the World: Cambodia and Vietnam

Anybody visiting the Far East is guaranteed a holiday experience they will never forget, with a fantastic chance to sample cultures totally alien to our own. Visitors can sample new foods, make friends with the locals and throw themselves into the lifestyle of this part of the world. There is also no shortage of things to do, whatever your taste. Some of the scenery is magnificent, while the history of the two countries is clear for all to see. Vietnam’s imperial history is evident in the city of Hue, while in Phnom Penh visitors can take a glimpse into the tragic recent past of Cambodia. These two countries deliver on all levels, whatever it is you’re after.

Cambodia - Angkor Wat

The numerous temples in the Angkor complex are at the heart of Cambodia, and are the source of tremendous pride to the people. Just on the outskirts of Siem Reap, it is possible to spend several days exploring the vast area. There are many fascinating temples to explore and admire, but the biggest and most famous one in the complex is Angkor Wat. It almost has to be seen to be believed, and the approach along the causeway is a brilliant and unforgettable experience. Though the best-preserved of all the Angkor temples, it bears the scars of Cambodia’s violent past, as bullet holes can clearly be seen. The temple is surrounded by a moat which used to contain crocodiles, while each one of the thousands of carvings is unique. So imposing and brilliantly decorated, Angkor Wat is without doubt something that everyone taking the journey to this land should visit.

Vietnam - Halong Bay

While the highlight of Cambodia is a throwback to the glorious history of the Khmer people, Vietnam’s pride and joy is a work of nature. Halong Bay, in the north of the country, comprises of more than three thousand small islands rising from the Gulf of Tonkin. With tiny beaches, inlets and caves galore there is lots to do in the bay, but most prefer to take a boat trip and admire the fantastic scenery that stretches out around them. If you believe the legend, the bay was created by a giant dragon that lived in the mountains. Regardless, there is no denying the beauty of Halong Bay, which is ideal both for those who want to relax and enjoy their surroundings and those whose desire is to explore. A stay on Cat Ba, the largest island on the bay, is also worth it: there are beaches and waterfalls to visit as well as the monument to Ho Chi Minh.

These two tremendous sights are both well worth a visit, but they are by no means all that Cambodia and Vietnam have to offer. Go Travel comes as a highly recommended supplier of backpacker’s travel insurance.
