Do I need to speak the language before I go?
If English is your first language, then you are very lucky as you will usually find someone
who speaks English wherever you go. However, you shouldn’t rely on this and it is only good
manners to put some effort in to learning at least some basic language. Do some research
into your
destination and check what languages you will come across there. You may find
that you are unlikely to meet anyone who speaks English, and will have to learn their
language if you want to find your way around and successfully travel.
If you find it difficult to learn a language, then concentrate on some basic and very
useful phrases, such as: Greetings, how to travel to places, booking tickets, travel
timetables, booking a room to stay in, ordering food & drink and asking for help. Buying
a
phrase book
with a dictionary in the back can be very useful and could help you out in a
jam.
Try to see your travelling as an opportunity to pick up some new language skills.
Push yourself to learn and you’ll get more out of the experience. Most importantly, don’t
be afraid to use what little you know. If you make some effort to learn a language, you
will often find that the locals you meet really appreciate this and will be much more
friendly and helpful than if you assume that they will communicate with you in English.
