Where should I stay when I get there?

It’s a good idea to have at least your first night’s accommodation booked before you arrive in a country/new place. That way, you can fob off all the hassle you will receive from touts at the airport/port/train/bus station, and go straight to your accommodation. Then you can get your bearings in peace and discover the best places to stay off your best resource – your fellow travellers.

The most obvious option is to stay in a hostel, but read our section on accommodation to check out your options. If you are planning on doing a lot of overland travel (eg. in Oz or New Zealand), you might want to hire/buy a campervan – that will sort out your travel & accommodation in one. If you are staying anywhere for longer, consider looking to rent an apartment. You could check out the message boards at hostels to see if anyone is looking for flatmates, and get some advice from the people who work in the hostel as they are likely to have some useful local knowledge.

You can search for accommodation, read hostel reviews from fellow travellers, browse pictures and book online with our partners, HostelBookers.
