Work in summer, adventure or kids camps
Working on a summer camp is a popular activity for gappers wanting to visit the USA, but this type of job can be found in many countries.
Many countries have residential summer camps where children get together and stay on site for several weeks, taking part in loads of fun & educational activities. There are lots of jobs to be had for energetic and outgoing young adults, preferably (though not necessarily) with some prior experience in working with children.
Some examples of the type of work to be found are:
Counsellors take on a more general role working closely with the children and ensuring that they have a brilliant & safe time. You need to be willing to get involved in lots of different fun activities like tennis, archery and watersports in the day. At night, you will be required to keep an eye on the children, possibly even sleeping in the cabin with your group of children.
Activity leaders and specialists in sports & arts can perform more specific teaching roles to the children, focusing on organising certain activities.
Support staff provide more general help in setting up and running the camps, and are needed for kitchen, office, housekeeping and maintenance work. There can be more opportunity to earn after the camps have broken up in this role and you don’t require any qualifications for this type of work.
Jobs on summer camps may not well paid, but accommodation is included. You may find the camps have strict rules about curfews, your appearance, alcohol consumption and smoking. Although it can be hard work, you can expect to have a rewarding, interesting and fun time and make friends with lots of like minded people from around the world.
